Acer pensylvanicum

Striped Maple

Zones 3-7

Wonderful underutilized small tree or large shrub (25-40') native to eastern US. It normally grows as a forest understory companion to beech and maple. It has striped bark, large leaves, and bright yellow fall color. Young twigs are greenish brown with long white stripes. Plants require some shade and are best grown in acidic, well-drained, organic rich soil.

 

 
Acer rubrum 'Brandywine'

Medium sized, fast growing tree with an oval to round crown. Its dark green foliage turns an excellent scarlet-red color in fall. Turns a little later than most Red Maples.

This fast growing, medium sized tree is one of the best  and most popular of the Red Maple cutivars. 'October Glory' Red Maple trees are excellent for intense metallic-red and orange fall color and have a medium to fast growth rate. Acer rubrum 'Somerset'

Somerset Maple glow with long-lasting, bright red fall color. It branches very well as a young tree while developing an uniform, symmetrical and upright oval form at maturity. The result of controlled crosses between 'October Glory' and 'Autumn Flame' Maples, this seedless male clone exhibits significant resistance to potato leaf hopper and has proven adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions. Trials have shown it to color well as far south as Georgia.

A classic shade tree native to the eastern and midwestern US with a common value for wood and syrup. Often thought of as one of the finest native maple species. Develops spectacular fall color in all shades of yellow, red, and orange. Slow to medium in growth rate with excellent hardiness. Flowers are greenish yellow in drooping clusters. A deciduous shade tree with an upright-oval to slightly spreading crown often reaches 60-75' in height. Its dark green palmately compound leaves turn a pumpkin color in the fall. In May, yellow flowers are borne. The bark is a rather curious combination of gray and brown with large, flat, smooth plates and scales.
